JARMANS GAP ROAD TO CLOSE FOR CONSTRUCTION WORK
Installation of box culvert near Blue Ridge Ave. begins August 15
CULPEPER — Beginning August 15, construction work will close Route 691 (Jarmans Gap Road) in Crozet between Route 1209 (Haden Lane) and Route 1201 (Blue Ridge Avenue).
The closure, expected to last 45-60 days, will allow for reconstruction of a box culvert in Powells Creek. The creek will be temporarily diverted while the existing box culvert is removed and the new pre-cast concrete box culvert is installed.
During the closure, motorists will be detoured from Jarmans Gap Road south on Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) to Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) to Old Trail Drive and back to Jarmans Gap Road. School buses will use the same route when the new school year begins on August 24.
The $3.9 million contract for Jarmans Gap Road was awarded to General Excavation Inc. of Warrenton in February, and construction began in May. The project is designed to improve safety for motorists, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians, along a 0.9-mile stretch of the road extending west from its intersection with Route 240 (Crozet Avenue). Once completed, Route 691 will have 12-foot wide travel lanes, a four-foot wide bicycle lane on each side of the road, curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway and sidewalk on the northern side of Route 691.
The project is slated for completion by Sept. 21, 2012.
