GEORGETOWN ROAD TO RE-OPEN FRIDAY EVENING
Daily lane closures will continue through September 23
CULPEPER — Friday evening, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will lift the around-the-clock southbound lane closure on Route 656 (Georgetown Road) in Albemarle County.
Georgetown Road has been closed to southbound traffic since July 5 while sidewalk and curb and gutter were installed. VDOT’s contractor, Vess Excavating, Ltd. of Charlottesville, finished this portion of the work early, allowing the road to re-open ahead of the planned August 25 date.
Georgetown Road will be open to all traffic from Friday evening through Sunday, with no work occurring. On Monday and Tuesday, the road will be closed to southbound traffic from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for paving work.
Beginning Wednesday, daily lane closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with traffic controlled by flagging. The closures will extend through the project’s Sept. 23 fixed completion date while grading, lighting and signal work is completed. No lane closures will occur over the Labor Day weekend.
Message boards will be in place to notify motorists of upcoming closures. Motorists should anticipate congestion during these times and use an alternate route if possible.
