ROUTE 53 REOPENED IN ALBEMARLE COUNTY
Motorists should still drive cautiously due to overnight freezing

CULPEPER — Route 53 in Albemarle County reopened at about 6:30 this evening after the Albemarle County Police Department completed the removal of abandoned vehicles and crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation plowed the road and applied chemicals to melt the remaining snow and sand for traction.

The road was closed Sunday evening from Route 20 to the Fluvanna County line due to extremely hazardous road conditions. Approximately 40-50 vehicles that were abandoned when they got stuck during the snowstorm were also creating a hazard for drivers. Drivers whose vehicles were towed today should contact the Albemarle County Police Department, 434-296-5807, for information about reclaiming them.
