June 18-25: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert
BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.
To help motorists take the guesswork out of travel plans, call VDOT’s 511 or visit http://www.511virginia.org for real-time traffic information.
Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.
***Nighttime Paving – I-77 northbound near Big Walker Mountain Tunnel: Due to nighttime paving on I-77 northbound between Big Walker Mountain Tunnel and mile marker 51, be alert to one-lane traffic northbound Sunday night (June 17-18) from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. (Completion: June 18, 2018) Interstate 77 northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel: An extensive paving project is underway between Exits 1 and 9 in West Virginia, creating the need for one-lane traffic northbound at East River Mountain Tunnel. Because traffic cannot be backed up within the tunnel due to safety concerns, be alert to workers periodically stopping traffic just before the tunnel.
West Virginia is taking truck traffic off of Interstate 77 at exit 1 and detouring them through Bluefield to exit 9 in Princeton. Interstate 77 north and Interstate 81 south truck traffic should consider taking Interstate 81 to Route 460 at Christiansburg to avoid delays. Interstate 81 north traffic coming from Tennessee should consider detouring at Abingdon exit 13 onto Route 11 north to Route 19, then onto Route 19/460 at Claypool Hill to avoid delays.
Use caution in this area and plan for significant delays, especially on weekends. For information regarding WVDOT’s paving project, visit www.wv511.org or download the WV511 Drive Safe app.
***F310 bridge rehabilitation over I-81 at Exit 10: Due to a concrete pour on Route F310 over Interstate 81 at exit 10, the bridge will be closed for approximately 24 hours beginning 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 26. Emergency vehicles will be flagged through the work zone if needed; however, no other vehicles will be permitted until the concrete has cured. (Completion: fall 2018)
Interstate 77 Exit 32: The right shoulder of the I-77 northbound exit 32 ramp is closed for shoulder widening operations. This work is part of a project to add a merge lane on I-77 northbound, beginning at Interstate 77 exit 32 and extending to the I-77/I-81 overlap at Interstate 81 exit 80. Use caution in this area. (Completion: September 2018)
I-81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road: Due to a bridge replacement project on Interstate 81 at the bridges over Halls Bottom Road, motorists should be alert to an altered traffic pattern.
Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) is closed underneath the interstate bridges. Only emergency-response vehicles will have access; all other vehicle traffic will be required to detour. (Completion: Fall 2018)
Interstate 81 – Exit 14: Work is underway to reconstruct Interstate 81 exit 14 to better accommodate traffic volumes and to replace the north and southbound interstate 81 bridges at exit 14. Traffic has shifted north and southbound to the newly constructed Interstate 81 bridges. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of day/night lane closures on Old Jonesboro Road, as well as the possibility of nighttime lane closures on Interstate 81 north and south. (Completion: fall 2018)
***Interstates 81 and 77 maintenance activities: This week, be alert to nighttime bridge repairs on I-81 northbound between exits 17 and 19 in Abingdon and northbound at exit 35 in Chilhowie due to bridge repairs. Because this work involves the curing of an epoxy on concrete, cooler air temperatures may create the need to keep the lanes closed past 7 a.m.
PRIMARY HIGHWAYS AND HIGH TRAFFIC SECONDARY ROADS:
***Route 609 at intersection of Route 460 Connector Phase II: Due to construction of the 460 Connector Phase II, motorists should be alert to the possibility of flaggers periodically directing traffic where the road intersects with Route 609. The Route 460 Connector Phase II is a 6.2-mile limited access highway being built almost entirely on a new location. Phase II is located between the U.S. Route 460 Connector Phase I, near Breaks Interstate Park, Route 460 and a connection with proposed Route 121 in Buchanan County.
Sewer line installation - Route 83 and connecting secondary routes: Sewer line installation work is underway along Route 83 and connecting secondary routes in Dickenson County, between Clintwood and the Wise County line. Use caution in this area and pay close attention to workers in the work zone. (Completion: Summer 2019)
