April 16-22: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert

BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.

Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.



***Interstate 77 – AEP Project: Due to a project by AEP to remove transmission lines above I-77 in Bland County, be alert to Virginia State Police conducting “slow rolls” along I-77 near mile marker 50 on April 18. The slow rolls will be north and souththbound and will begin approximately three miles from mile marker 50 in each direction. (Completion: April 18)

F310 bridge rehabilitation over I-81 at Exit 10: One-way traffic is now using the newly constructed side of the Route F310 bridge over Interstate 81 at exit 10. Traffic signals are controlling one-way traffic on Route F310 while the other side of the bridge is demolished and replaced. Be alert to periodic nighttime lane closures on I-81 near exit 10 due to this effort. (Completion: fall 2018) Interstate 77 Exit 32: The right shoulder of the I-77 northbound exit 32 ramp is closed for shoulder widening operations. This work is part of a project to add a merge lane on I-77 northbound, beginning at Interstate 77 exit 32 and extending to the I-77/I-81 overlap at Interstate 81 exit 80. Use caution in this area. (Completion: September 2018)

I-81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road: Due to a bridge replacement project on Interstate 81 at the bridges over Halls Bottom Road, motorists should be alert to an altered traffic pattern.

Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) is closed underneath the interstate bridges. Only emergency-response vehicles will have access; all other vehicle traffic will be required to detour. (Completion: Fall 2018)

Interstate 81 – Exit 14:  Work is underway to reconstruct Interstate 81 exit 14 to better accommodate traffic volumes and to replace the north and southbound interstate 81 bridges at exit 14. Northbound traffic has shifted to the newly constructed Interstate 81 bridge and the new exit 14 off ramp, and southbound traffic has been shifted to allow for new bridge construction. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of day/night lane closures on Old Jonesboro Road, as well as the possibility of nighttime lane closures on Interstate 81 north and south. (Completion: fall 2018)

***Interstate 81 maintenance activities: Be alert to the following maintenance activities this week on I-81: - Pothole patching north and southbound during daylight hours between mile marker 2 in Bristol and mile marker 30 in Washington County. - Brush removal and left lane closures on I-81 north and southbound during daylight hours in the Wytheville area of Wythe County. - Roadway sweeping north and southbound during daytime hours in the Wytheville area.

***Interstate 77 maintenance activities: This week, be alert to daytime lane closures due to roadway sweeping on I-77 northbound in Wythe and Bland counties. Also be alert to nighttime lane closures north and southbound at Big Walker Mountain Tunnel due to tunnel washing.


Bland County

Route 1001 (Jackson Street): A section of Route 1001 (Jackson Street) in Bland County will temporarily close through May 7 to replace a pipe. The closure is located between Routes 52 and 1003. Motorists should pay close attention to detour signs. (Completion: May 7, 2018)

Buchanan County

Route 609 at intersection of Route 460 Connector Phase II: The Route 460 Connector Phase II is a 6.2-mile four-lane, limited access highway being built almost entirely on a new location.  Be alert to heavy equipment and construction traffic crossing at the intersection of Route 609 near Orchard Road.

Phase II is located between the U.S. Route 460 Connector Phase I, constructed near Breaks Interstate Park, Route 460 and a connection with the proposed Route 121 (Coalfields Expressway) in Buchanan County. 


Dickenson County

Route 649: Work is underway to widen curves along a section of Route 649 in Dickenson County, near the Wise County line. Use caution in this area and be alert to flaggers controlling one-way traffic during daylight hours. (Completion: August 2018) Sewer line installation - Route 83 and connecting secondary routes: Sewer line installation work is underway along Route 83 and connecting secondary routes in Dickenson County, between Clintwood and the Wise County line. Use caution in this area and pay close attention to workers in the work zone. (Completion: Summer 2019)



Lee County

Route 421 – power line relocation: Be alert to workers in the area and the possibility of delays on Route 421 between Alternate Route 58 at Pennington Gap and the Leeman Field area due to a power line relocation project by Old Dominion Power. (Completion: Fall 2018)



Scott County

Route 23 bridge replacement at Weber City: Due to replacement of the Route 23 bridges over North Fork Holston River in the Weber City area of Scott County, motorists can expect one-lane traffic and a 12-foot-width restriction in each direction. The speed limit in the work zone is 35 mph. (Completion: Summer 2019)


Utility Projects – various locations: Anticipate lane closures during daylight hours at the following locations in Scott County due to utility projects:

  • Water line installation work along Route 71 (Nickelsville Highway) and connecting secondary routes between Route 792 (Slabtown Road) and Route 790 (Pin Oak Circle). (Completion: Spring 2018)
  • Power line installation along U.S. Route 23 between Route 58 at Duffield and Route 871 (Natural Tunnel Parkway). (Completion: Spring 2018)
  • Tree removal and power line construction along Route 870 (Natural Tunnel Parkway) between US Route 23 at Duffield and Route 653 (Mabe Stanleytown Road). (Completion: fall 2018)



Smyth County

Route 16 at Interstate 81 in Marion: Be alert to the possibility of day and nighttime lane closures on Interstate 81 north and southbound and Route 16 in Marion at Interstate 81 due to repairs to the interstate bridges. (Completion: May 2018)

Tazewell County

***Route 16 – pipe replacement: Due to the replacement of three pipes along a section of Route 16 in Tazewell County, motorists should anticipate lengthy delays. The work will be located between 7.2 miles south of Business Route 19 and 8.1 miles south of Business Route 19. (Completion: April 2018)

Leatherwood Lane (Town of Bluefield): Be aware of road work improvements along Leatherwood Lane in Bluefield. Work includes adding a left turn lane for Leatherwood Lane traffic turning left onto West Cumberland Road, shoulder widening, guardrail improvements, sidewalk installation, and paving. Watch for slowed traffic through the work zone, as the traffic patterns will be shifted during construction work. (Completion: May 2018)

***Route 19/460 – sewer line installation: Tazewell County has a sewer line installation project underway on Route 19/460 between Tazewell and Springville. Be alert to right lane closures due to the work. (Completion: early May 2018)


***Route 61 bridge: Motorists should be alert to a new traffic pattern beginning April 12 at the Route 61 bridge reconstruction project, located along East Riverside Drive over the Clinch River in the town of Tazewell. Motorists should use caution in this area. (Completion: August 2018)


Route 102 bridge replacement: A project to reconstruct the Route 102 bridge over Laurel Fork in the Pocahontas area of Tazewell County is underway. Motorists should use caution in this area and be alert to signals controlling one-way traffic across the bridge. (Completion: November 2018)

Washington County

Route 91 bridge: Due to replacement of a portion of the Route 91 bridge in the Damascus area of Washington County, traffic is restricted to one 10-foot-wide lane and being controlled by traffic signals. Creeper Trail users should stop and use crosswalk buttons to safely cross Route 91. Use caution in this area. (Completion: April 2019)



Wise County

***Alternate Route 58 – utility work: Utility crews are drilling test holes on the shoulder and in the median of Alternate Route 58 at Tacoma.  Motorists should be alert to shoulder closures and possible lane closures.  (Completion: May 1)

Business Route 23 bridge: Traffic signals are controlling one-way traffic across the Business Route 23 bridge located near the city limits of Norton while bridge work is underway. The bridge is limited to 12-foot-wide vehicles during construction. Route 610, located underneath the bridge, has been closed for safety. (Completion: May 2019) Route 646 – slide repairs: A section of Route 646 (Wise Mountain Road) in the Coeburn area of Wise County is closed until slide repairs are complete. Motorists should detour using Route 706 (Tacoma Mountain Road).

Sewer line projects: Be alert to lane closures during daylight hours due to sewer line installations in the Stonega community in Wise County near Appalachia, involving lane closures along Routes 78 and 600.  (Completion: spring 2018)



Wythe County

Route 712 (Miller’s Creek) pipe replacement: Due to a pipe replacement project, motorists should be alert to flaggers directing traffic on Route 712 (Miller’s Creek) in Wythe County during daylight hours. Use caution in this area and plan extra travel time. (Completion: spring 2018)          



Route 460 – shoulder improvements: Shoulder improvements along Route 460 in Tazewell County between the Buchanan County line and Claypool Hill have been completed.
