Reconstruction of Interstate 81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road beginning in September
Closure of Halls Bottom Road underneath interstate bridges will benefit safety during construction

BRISTOL – Motorists will see orange construction signs go up next week along I-81 near exit 10 in anticipation of the construction of two new Interstate 81 bridges over Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) in Washington County.

During construction – scheduled to begin in mid-September – Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) will be closed under the bridges to ensure safety. Emergency medical services and law enforcement vehicles will be able to pass beneath the bridges; however, all other vehicles will need to plan alternate routes while construction is underway.

Because of the bridge’s proximity to the exit 14 work zone, the 60 mph work zone will extend from exit 14 to exit 10 on northbound and southbound I-81.

“For the safety of the public and workers, we’ll have one consistent zone for both projects,” Marty Halloway, P.E., VDOT Bristol Project Controls Engineer, said. “It has been shown to enhance safety by providing consistency between work zones in close proximity.”

During daylight hours, motorists will have two 11-foot-wide travel lanes across the bridges. Temporary lane closures will occur during overnight hours from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., when traffic volumes are lowest.

Orders Construction Company, St. Albans, W.Va., will be responsible for construction of the $11.3 million bridges.

Construction will be completed by fall 2018. Built in the early 1960s, the interstate bridges have reached their lifespan and are ready for replacement. For more details on all the planned improvements, visit www.VirginiaDOT.org/81Corridor.    (END)
