Commonwealth Transportation Board awards replacement of Route 23 bridges in Weber City

RICHMOND – The Commonwealth Transportation Board recently awarded a $6.5 million contract to replace the Route 23 bridges over North Fork Holston River in the Weber City area of Scott County.

Vecellio & Grogan, Inc., Beckley, W.Va., will be responsible for the bridge replacement project.

Construction is anticipated to begin late fall and be completed by November 2018. The bridges, one constructed in the 1940s and one in the 1960s when the route was widened to four lanes, have reached their life span and are ready for replacement.

The bridges carry approximately 24,000 vehicles per day.

During construction, there will be one-12-foot-wide travel lane in each direction. For the first phase of construction, north and southbound traffic will use the northbound bridge while the southbound bridge is reconstructed.

Access to businesses, entrances and connecting roads within the project limits will be maintained during construction.

The speed limit inside the work zone will be lowered to 35 mph to enhance safety for motorists and highway workers. For more details regarding the project, visit http://bit.ly/2bP5FUn.

VDOT’s Bristol District consists of 12 counties in southwestern Virginia:  Washington, Smyth, Lee, Scott, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Bland, Wise, Dickenson, Grayson, and Wythe.
