10 a.m. January 22 Travel Advisory: Avoid unnecessary travel, more snow anticipated this afternoon through tomorrow

BRISTOL – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is out in force, clearing highways in southwest Virginia.  Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in anticipation of additional snow this afternoon through tomorrow.

As of 10 a.m., the majority of primary and secondary routes are snow-covered, slick and hazardous.

Accidents have been reported in multiple areas of Washington County: Route 11 at Watauga Road, Hillman Highway and Interstate 81 northbound at mile markers 22 and 28.

Crews work to clear interstates and primary roads first, then major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, then other secondary roads and subdivision streets. Crews focus their efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.

Monitor road conditions and view live cameras at 511virginia.org

VDOT has approximately 2,500 crewmembers and more than 13,000 pieces of equipment, including plows, trucks and spreaders, for snow-removal operations statewide. In addition, VDOT uses contractors to maintain the interstates throughout the commonwealth. Supplies are in good shape with over 650,000 tons of salt, sand and abrasives and nearly two million gallons of liquid salt.

Go to www.511virginia.org for road conditions and www.virginiadot.org for all other travel related and transportation information. Call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-367-ROAD (7623) to report debris, downed trees or other hazards on the roadway. Get updates from VDOT Bristol on Twitter @VaDOTBristol.
