VDOT CREWS ARE OUT IN FORCE AS SNOW FALLS IN SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA
Be alert to rapidly changing travel conditions
BRISTOL— The Virginia Department of Transportation reports snow removal efforts are underway in southwestern Virginia.
The majority of roads in southwestern Virginia are snow-covered and slick, including sections of Interstates 77 and 81.
In Wise County, many roads are snow-covered and hazardous. Route 23 north is currently blocked at Powell Mountain Overlook and at Indian Creek Mountain. Motorists should postpone unnecessary travel if at all possible.
Crews first begin clearing interstates, primary roads and major secondary roads that connect localities, fire stations, employment hubs, military posts, schools, hospitals and other important public facilities.
Secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated if multiday storms hit the commonwealth, but crews will focus efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.
