Highway projects valued at $5.4 million awarded for southwestern Virginia

RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently awarded six contracts valued at approximately $5.4 million for the Bristol District.  The Bristol District consists of 12 counties in southwestern Virginia:  Washington, Smyth, Lee, Scott, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Bland, Wise, Dickenson, Grayson, and Wythe.

Olympus Painting Contractors, Inc., Tarpon Springs, Fla., received a $1.7 million contract to make bridge repairs at Interstate 81 Exit 81 in the Fort Chiswell area of Wythe County and at Interstate 77 Exit 64 in the Rocky Gap area of Bland County.     

A $1.2 million contract was awarded to Ken Construction Co., Inc., Lebanon, to replace a portion of the Route 460 bridge located over Mudlick Creek in the Richlands area near Acme Road.  During construction, traffic will be restricted to one lane eastbound and westbound.  Once the project begins it will take approximately 12 months to complete.

A $1 million contract was awarded to Orders Construction Company, Inc., St. Albans, W.Va., to replace a portion of the Route 91 bridge over Laurel Creek in Smyth County

Two projects were awarded for bridge work in Wythe County:

  • A $1.1 million contract was awarded to Lanford Brothers Company, Inc., Roanoke, to repair six bridges on Interstate
  • Elk Knob, Inc., Pennington Gap, received a $287,664 contract to replace a portion of the Route 614 bridge over Beaverdam Creek in Wythe County.

Lastly, a $174,168 contract was awarded to W-L Construction & Paving, Inc., Chilhowie, to pave shoulders and install rumble strips and guardrail on Route 647 in Washington County.
