Funding secured to build Damascus Library and Tourism Center
Transporatation Enhancement Grant awarded
Damascus, Va. – Local and elected officials were on hand today to announce that funding has been secured for the Damascus Library and Tourism Center, which will be located on Waters Street in Damascus.
Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin fall 2008.
Over $1 million in funding for the library and tourism center has been provided by:
- VDOT’s Transportation Enhancement Program - $582,000
- Washington County - $300,000
- Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission - $100,000
- Town of Damascus - $30,000
Work to secure construction funding has been underway since 1998. In addition to providing space for the library and local tourism, the 6,500 square-foot facility will also contain meeting and training room space that will be open to the public.
“Building the new library will provide more than triple the space we currently have,” Charlotte Parsons, Washington County Public Library director, said. “The space will enable us to expand our educational programs and give us opportunities to establish arts and nature programs with other groups and state agencies.”
The Damascus Library and Tourism Center will be an official information outlet of the Virginia Department of Tourism, focusing on Washington County and regional recreation opportunities.
Washington County Public Library System provides library facilities in Damascus, Glade Spring, Hayters Gap and Mendota.
VDOT’s Enhancement Grant Program offers broad opportunities and federal funding for creative projects that integrate transportation into our communities and environment. The qualifying projects are meant to improve non-motorized transportation, enhance the public’s traveling experience, revitalize communities and improve the quality of life. (END)
