VDOT CREWS TREATING ROADS
Motorists should prepare for hazardous conditions

VDOT has 1044 salt trucks on the roads throughout Northern Virginia, including 147 salt trucks on the interstate highways. In addition, road crews have pre-treated the ramps and bridges at the Springfield Interchange as well as the high bridges and ramps at the Route 1/I-495 interchange in Alexandria and other “hot spot” locations throughout Northern Virginia.  Commuter lots have also been treated in advance of the storm. 

Tree crews under contract with VDOT are also standing by in the event that ice causes trees or limbs to fall onto roadways.

VDOT urges motorists to observe the following winter driving tips:

• Make sure your vehicle is winter ready and keep an emergency driving kit in your car and wear your seatbelt.
  

• Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.
  

• Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.
  

• When driving on ice, don’t slam on your brakes. Travel gently. Turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.
