ROAD COMPLETION IN VIENNA PAVES THE WAY FOR COMMUTERS AND SHOPPERS

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed a number of pedestrian access and safety improvements on Branch Road, stretching from Valley Drive to Maple Avenue, in downtown Vienna.

“These improvements will increase mobility and access to that section of town,” said Dic Burke, VDOT project engineer.

The $1.2 million project was completed on schedule Thursday, Nov. 15.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Branch Road tot lot, next to Danor Plaza.

The safety improvement project includes:
  • A two-foot wide curb and storm water gutter on each side

  • A five-foot wide sidewalk with a buffer strip between the back of the curb and sidewalk

  • Improved street intersections and entrances
In addition, a left turn storage lane was constructed in the approach to Maple Avenue.

Parking is now allowed on both sides of the street.

The storm water system was replaced with a new system to improve the capture and conveyance of runoff.

This included a system to drain the sub-surface pavement layers.
