Northern Virginia receives $2.1 billion for transit, rail and road projects


The Commonwealth Transportation Board today approved an $11 billion statewide funding program – including $2.1 billion for Northern Virginia - for public transportation, rail and highway projects for the next six fiscal years, beginning July 1.

It also approved the first six-year funding program for highway maintenance and operations projects.

The comprehensive package addresses key public transit initiatives, safety and rehabilitation of existing highways and projects to ease bottlenecks.

Some major projects scheduled to begin over the next six years in Northern Virginia:
  • Interstate 66 – Construction will begin in spring 2009 on the $33 million major pavement rehabilitation between the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) and Route 50 in Fairfax County (seven miles).


  • I-66 Gainesville interchange (Phase 4) – Construction will begin in 2013 on the $181 million project to construct an interchange on Route 29 at Linton Hall Road and widen Route 29 from I-66 to Virginia Oaks (one mile).


  • I-66 – A $1.5 million multi-modal transportation study will begin next year on I-66 inside the Capital Beltway.


  • Interstate 95 – Construction will begin in early 2008 on the $110 million project to add a fourth lane
    in each direction for six miles between Newington and the Occoquan River.


  • Route 50 – Construction will begin in 2013 on the $53 million project to add a third lane in each direction from Lee Road in Fairfax County to Poland Road in Loudoun County.


  • Washington Boulevard/Columbia Pike interchange – Construction will begin in late 2009 on the $39.4 million project to replace the Washington Boulevard Bridge at Columbia Pike.


  • Route 50 and Courthouse Road interchange in Arlington – Construction will begin in 2009 on the $32 million project to improve Route 50 at 10th Street and Courthouse Road.


  • Regional transportation management plan - $58.6 million will be available to in Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg areas to address congestion during the construction of several mega-projects.


  • Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project – Construction scheduled to begin in 2008 on the $2.4-$2.7 billion extension.


  • Virginia Railway Express – $15 million for rail cars.


  • Metro - $20 million for rolling stock.
