VDOT Opens Interchange for Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum On Route 28 at Air and Space Museum Parkway

The Virginia Department of Transportation today opened the newly completed interchange on Route 28 in Fairfax County for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The Center opens to the public on December 15.

In a 1996 Memorandum of Understanding between then-Governor George Allen and the Smithsonian Institution, the Commonwealth of Virginia committed to provide $40 million in infrastructure improvements to serve the Museum at no cost to the Smithsonian.

Since 2000, VDOT has constructed the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center’s foundation, service roads, utilities, parking lots, and the taxiway and landing strip at a cost of approximately $24.4 million.

The Route 28/Air and Space Museum Parkway Interchange was constructed in two phases. The portion providing access to the Museum cost $16.3 million was funded with state and federal dollars. The remainder of the interchange was constructed through the Route 28 PPTA design-build contract. The $13.4 million project was funded by the landowners and the state.

Signs directing visitors to the Museum will be installed terstate 66, the Dulles Toll Road, and Route 28. The brown signs read “Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center”. They will be uncovered just prior to the opening on Dec. 15.
