VDOT Installs its First Countdown Signal for Pedestrian in Northern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has installed the first of four pedestrian countdown signals in Fairfax County that will make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross busy streets.

The pedestrian signal is located at Vaden Drive and Country Creek Road near the Vienna Metro Center. The remaining three signals will be installed this year along Route 1 in a cooperative effort with Fairfax County to improve pedestrian safety in that congested corridor.

Pedestrian countdown signals alert pedestrians to how many seconds they have to cross the street, taking the guesswork out of figuring out how much time remains to safely cross the street before the signal changes. The signal cost $3,700 to install.
