Springfield Interchange bridge beam work finishes 45 minutes early

SPRINGFIELD – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) work on I-95 and I-395 at the Springfield Interchange was successfully completed yesterday, and roadways opened to traffic 45 minutes earlier than planned, according to Steve Titunik, project spokesman.

VDOT crews competed the installation of massive bridge beams while traffic was shut down overnight on Sept. 6.

Two weeks ago, crews hoisted three of six 100-ton beams 100 feet into the air onto bridge piers over the weekend. Construction was halted to allow for Labor Day weekend travelers, but this weekend the work was completed when the three remaining beams were lifted into place Saturday night.

Northbound traffic approaching the Springfield Interchange on Interstate 95 was routed onto the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway. Drivers wanting to go to the Inner Loop or to northbound Interstate 395 followed a 7-mile detour. Construction was completed yesterday morning 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Lane closures only lasted until 9:15 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. as planned.

Titunik estimated the longest backup was eight miles long. All construction on the Springfield Interchange Project is expected to be completed in late 2007.
