CTB Awards $38.4 Million Contract for Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project
The Commonwealth Transportation Board today awarded a $38.4 million contract for the next phase of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Initial work is scheduled to begin in mid-June.
This project will serve to construct eleven elevated ramps over and along Cameron Run and Hunting Creek, thereby reducing impacts on wetlands and other natural resources. The completion of this construction is essential in order to meet overall project completion deadlines (opening all new Capital Beltway lanes on the Virginia approaches to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge when the new and wider bridge is completed). Substantial incentives are built into the contract to ensure timely completion.
R.R Dawson Bridge Company, LLC of Lexington, Kentucky is the contractor for the project.
Existing bridges on the Rte. 1 interchange will not be replaced or impacted in this contract. Those bridges will be replaced in the next Rte. 1 construction project, which will begin at the end of 2003 or early 2004.
The $38.4 million contract is the tenth Wilson Bridge Project contract for which bids have been received by VDOT. To date, eight of the ten contracts have come in under project estimate. Virginia’s cumulative average-under for the ten contracts is more than 10 percent.
The Wilson Bridge Project is comprised of a 7.5-mile Beltway (I-95/I-495) reconstruction, including replacement of the 40-year old, 6-lane, one-mile long bridge with a 12-lane bridge. The project also includes reconstruction of four interchanges: Telegraph Road and U.S. Route 1 in Virginia, and I-295 and MD 210 (Indian Head Highway) interchanges in Maryland.
