Commonwealth Transportation Board Awards $54.6 Million Contract for Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project
The Commonwealth Transportation Board today awarded a $54.6 million contract for the next phase of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge construction project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Initial work is scheduled to begin in mid-February.
The project will serve to tie existing I-95 traffic into the first phase of bridge construction by connecting existing Beltway traffic to the new outer loop bridge. It also includes:
Reconstruction of the existing Washington Street overpass bridge to accommodate the widening of I-95 in Virginia;
Washington Street, as part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, will be reconstructed from the City of Alexandria limits to approximately Church Street to the north;
The construction of an urban deck on both sides of the new Washington Street Bridge over I-95, as well as sound walls along the north and south sides of I-95 to help mitigate both construction and traffic noise;
The reconfiguration of the parking facilities of both Hunting Towers and Hunting Terrace and improvements to utilities serving the general area;
Improve the connectivity of numerous pedestrian trails and other improvements such as landscaping and special lighting along Washington Street.
The $54.6 million contract is the ninth Wilson Bridge Project contract for which bids have been received by VDOT. To date, seven of the nine contracts have come in under project estimate.
Corman Construction, Inc. of Annapolis Junction, Maryland is the contractor for the project.
