Internship Program: What Interns Say About Their Experience

Michael Boone, Environmental Intern and Nantasha Williams, Public Affairs Intern"Why VDOT? VDOT is the 'critical crossroad' (literally and figuratively) between sustainability in the public and private sectors in connecting, transporting, and planning.

I am really enjoying my job and its diversity in scope. I have delineated wetlands, monitored bridge construction, reviewed engineering plans, and investigated jurisdictional waters all in one week!!!

One of my greatest sources of fulfillment is serving others. This experience has been irreplaceable.”

Michael Boone, Environmental Intern
Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering

"My VDOT experience has been challenging yet exciting and fun.

As the public affairs intern I have created the weekly highway alerts, responded to citizens concerns, and drafted some traffic alerts.

Currently I am working on a few stories for insideVDOT, and I am very anxious to see the end results of my journalistic work.

My major in school was political science so you can imagine how intimidating this was.”

Nantasha Williams, Public Affairs Intern
Major: Political Science

Caroline Heltzel, Local Assistance Intern“I have always heard nothing but great remarks about the department and its employees.

Those positive remarks helped my decision to apply for the internship and I am thrilled to be here working with the Local Assistance Division.

In Local Assistance, I am able to have a balance of both office and field work.

The saying ‘you learn something new everyday’ is very true when working with the department of transportation.”

Caroline Heltzel, Local Assistance Intern
Major: Sociology

Tom Whitmore, Location & Design Intern“I love engineering and design, and this opportunity provides both plus more.

The work environment in VDOT is amazing and I love how everyone is so passionate about their job and creating the safest road possible for the public.

It seems people are always willing to help out.  It has only proved to be the best work experience I have ever had."

Tom Whitmore, Location and Design Intern
Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering

Lindsey Campbell, Public Affairs Intern“One of my professors told me that if I ever did an internship in a public affairs office I would read a lot of newspapers and I have, but I was also told during my interview that Public Affairs gets involved in many, many things.

I had prepared to take pictures and discuss the new [safety equipment] product with some of the bridge workers, but I never imagined I would be experiencing it first-hand!”

Lindsey Campbell, Public Affairs Intern
Major: Communications

Alex Pawlowski, Transportation Planning Intern“As someone who has a lot of interest in sustainability, I had many doubts that I could find an internship that could satisfy that.

Little did I know that a month later that I would have a shot at being an Intern for the Planning department, which, among other things, deals with VDOT’s initiatives for better bicycle and pedestrian access as a long range plan for a ‘greener’ Virginia.

To have an internship is one thing, but to have an internship that I look forward to on a Sunday afternoon is awesome.”

Alex Pawlowski, Transportation Planning Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science

Sheela Jones, Training Intern“I was very excited about the possibility to work for an organization whose missions and values really aligned with my own.

It was so great to learn about the significance VDOT places on developing and promoting learning among its workforce.

The purpose and goals of the VDOT Learning Center is a perfect match for my passion to work with people to help them continuously grow and develop essential skills.  This is why I am glad to be an intern at VDOT.”

Sheela Jones, Training Intern
Major: Human Resource Management

Sheela Jones, Training InternSummer interns were placed throughout VDOT’s nine districts and held a variety of roles.

Each received leadership training, was assigned a supervisor in their work unit and received mentoring from their supervisor and the internship program manager.

Interns were asked what they wanted to learn and accomplish this summer. VDOT is proud to say 96 percent of the interns achieved their two desired goals!
