Engineer Scholarship Program
The Engineer Scholarship Program at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) offers civil engineering students the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world work experience while earning scholarship money to assist with educational expenses. Pay for your educational expenses with a $3,500 stipend per semester. Stipends are issued based on continued program eligibility.
You are eligible to apply if you:
- Are a rising junior or senior in an undergraduate ABET-accredited civil engineering program

Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a four-point scale
- Maintain Virginia residency or attend a Virginia college or university
On-the-job experience will help you in your studies, as well as prepare you for your future career choices.
All Engineer Scholarship Program participants spend summers working in a challenging and interesting VDOT position.
Each position is well-paid and provides hands-on work experience within a variety of disciplines and geographic areas.
All scholar students work directly with the program manager to ensure their work experience contributes to their studies, career goals, and developmental needs.
Refine your professional skills through program projects, workshops, and individual coaching.
Becoming a successful professional is not simply about building technical skills. You will build your professional skills through targeted competency development, resulting in expanded career opportunities.
You will work with the program manager to create a personalized development plan.
Professional skill development includes:
- Business communications
- Resume preparation
- Interviewing
- Priority management
- Scheduling
- Negotiation skills
If qualified, you may gain full-time employment as an associate engineer with VDOT upon graduation.
Repay your scholarship by working for VDOT, upon graduation, for six months for each semester of stipend received.
