Mike Estes currently serves as the acting Hampton Roads district administrator.
Prior to this he worked directly for the commissioner’s office overseeing a variety of efforts involving business and program delivery as the director of strategic initiatives.
His special projects included business process reengineering and organizational change within the agency.
Mike also served as the Interstate 95 Corridor Improvement Program project manager.
For eight years he was the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Local Assistance division administrator, where his team partnered with local governments on a range of transportation issues. This included collaborating with cities in the Hampton Roads region on streamlining program delivery.
He has also led engineering activities for the agency in Arlington and Fairfax counties.
In 2011, he led VDOT’s Staunton District operations on an interim basis.
Prior to VDOT, Mike worked in the private sector overseeing civil engineering projects. He has a bachelors in civil engineering from Virginia Tech and an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University.
He and his wife Elizabeth have two children, Matthew and Anna.
