Michael A. Russell, a 10-year employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), became the Bristol district administrator in January 2011.
Russell oversees road maintenance, construction and operations for a region of southwest Virginia that includes more than 7,500 miles of roadway, 12 counties and about 600 employees.
Following graduation from college, Russell joined Anderson and Associates in Blacksburg, where he worked in various roles including project engineer, project manager and associate vice president.
In 2000, he began his VDOT career in the Location and Design division for the Salem District as transportation engineer senior. He has also served as VDOT Wytheville resident engineer, location and design manager in the Salem District, and most recently served as assistant district administrator for planning, investment management and preliminary engineering in VDOT’s Salem District.
Education
Russell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech.
He is also a graduate of VDOT’s Executive Leadership Program and is a registered professional engineer.

Charter president for the Blue Ridge Section of the American Society of Highway Engineers.
