2005 success stories

VDOT employees and projects have won numerous state-level awards, such as the Governor’s Technology Award, Transportation Safety Board General Traffic Safety Award, Community Service Award and Career Achievement Award. However, the agency has also won prestigious national awards as well. Following, is a list of national awards received in 2005. 

Commissioner Philip Shucet was recognized in January as one of the Top 25 Newsmakers of 2004 by "Engineering News Record". This is what the January 3-10, 2005 issue of the magazine said: "Streamlining agency spending habits and contracting oversight, Virginia Dept. of Transportation Commissioner Philip Shucet is winning the trust of the state's controversy-weary contractors and motorists. Shucet boosted agency accountability with new approaches, such as Dashboard, the most comprehensive online project status tracking system in any state DOT. He also implemented a new cost estimating system has has reduced margin of error from 187% to 30%, and has expanded interface with contractors and cities in executing and managing local construction programs. VDOT has already met it entire fiscal 2005 goal of 68% of construction contracts finished on time, up from just 22% four year ago. And it has increased the number of jobs finishing within budget." Lynchburg's Route 58 Danville Bypass project received the 2005 Engineering Excellence Awards Grand Award in the Transportation Category by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia.

The award was presented to VDOT officials and the project contractor, The Louis Berger Group, at the Engineering Excellence Awards banquet in February in Richmond. The award recognizes innovation, expertise, and ingenuity in engineering achievement.

The new 7.1-mile southern bypass opened in May 2004. The bypass increases the safety of travelers using the U.S. Route 58 corridor, allows for improved traffic flow through the city, and is expected to help expand the regional economy while maintaining the area’s unique rural character.

VDOT and Bearing Point's Right of Way and Utilities Management System (RUMS)' Case Study received a Laureate's Medal from the Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation Inc. The Case Study is now part of Computerworld's Global Archives and Academic Council.
