2003 success stories
VDOT employees and projects have won numerous state-level awards, such as the Governor’s Technology Award, Transportation Safety Board General Traffic Safety Award, Community Service Award and Career Achievement Award. However, the agency has also won prestigious national awards as well. Following, is a list of national awards received in 2003.
Goshen Bridge
American Galvanizers Association 2003 Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, Goshen Bridge is the only metal truss bridge of its size (260 1/2 feet long) in the Staunton District. It was completed in June 1891. After over a century of service, it was in need of rehabilitation. This was accomplished via hot-dip galvanizing the structural steel.

Employer of Choice
VDOT was one of only a dozen companies nationwide named an Employer of Choice by the American Council on Education in 2003. It was the only state agency in the country to receive the honor.
Smart Road Bridge
Federal Highway Administration/U.S. Department of Transportation 2002 Biennial Awards, Excellence in Highway Design.
VDOT and Figg Engineering received an Honorable Mention for Major Highway Structures over $10 million for the Smart Road Bridge in Christiansburg.
VDOT has won several FHWA/DOT Excellence in Highway Design awards in the past. The bridge, one phase in the 5.7-mile Smart Road project, was designed and constructed to satisfy functional, aesthetic, and economic requirements. The bridge also accommodates various testing equipment associated with Smart Road roadway research. The Smart Road, when completed, will provide a vital public link to Interstate 81 from the town of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech.

American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) and Concrete Products Magazine Bridge Award Of Excellence
The two bridges are among seven national winners. All concrete segmental or cable-stayed bridges located within the 50 United States and opened to the public or dedicated between January 1, 2001, and August 1, 2003, were eligible for the inaugural awards competition. Entrants in the competition were judged on Innovation of Design and/or Construction, Rapid Construction, Aesthetics and/or Harmony with Environment, Cost Competitiveness and Minimization of Construction Impact on the Traveling Public (when applicable).
GIS Program
Special Achievement Award, Environmental Systems Research Institute
VDOT’s GIS Program was recognized as one of the 150 most outstanding among the more than 100,000 ESRI user sites worldwide.
