2002 success stories

VDOT employees and projects have won numerous state-level awards, such as the Governor’s Technology Award, Transportation Safety Board General Traffic Safety Award, Community Service Award and Career Achievement Award. However, the agency has also won prestigious national awards as well. Following, is a list of national awards received in 2002.

Northern Va. Fairfax County Parkway Project team
American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Quality Exemplary Partner Award
The team won this award for bringing the Fairfax County Parkway into service more than eight months ahead of schedule. This is an important cross-county connector. The team was cited for “reducing the travel time of local commuter traffic, providing a critical link to I-66, I-95 and the Dulles Toll Road, and improved overall safety and traffic flow.” Only five of the 64 nation-wide teams competing in the competition attended the Exemplary Partner level of performance.

Smart Road Bridge
Concrete Reinforced Steel Institute named the bridge one of America’s top 10 structural designs for 2002. Only two bridges received the national award that year.

Brook Run Paleo-Indian site
The American Council of Engineering Companies “Grand Award” to VDOT and the Louis Berger Group for archaeology at the site and the engineering redesign of Route 3 adjacent to the Culpeper County site.

VDOT’s "Crash Course” for driver's ed students in Northern Virginia
Received an American Road and Transportation Builders Association and the National Safety Council Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Award. The course educates young drivers about the dangers and consequences associated with driving before their driving habits are established.
