VDOT: A World-Class Leader for the Future

By Commissioner David S. Ekern, P.E.

VDOT is on its way to becoming a world-class 21st century leader in the transportation industry.

Though we are made up of nine districts, 30 operational divisions and more than 40 residencies, we are one organization. Together, we are making significant strides to meet this vision by reshaping our transportation system, our business and our workforce.

One critical element tied into each of these goals is saving lives.

You may be asking yourself how saving lives ties into becoming a 21st century transportation leader. Saving lives is a core VDOT value and the clear goal of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan – to save 100 lives and prevent 4,000 injuries on Virginia’s roadways by 2010

Each year, about 900 people are killed in motor vehicle crashes despite our best efforts. We must get more aggressive and more strategic in our efforts to save lives and prevent injuries.

That’s why I am calling for VDOT and our safety partners to reinvent our safety practices.

In this issue of the Bulletin, you will learn how VDOT is taking a more aggressive approach to safety by focusing our efforts and investment on programs that have the biggest impact on saving lives, and by bringing more unity in our work with safety partners such as the Virginia State Police and Department of Motor Vehicles.

We will concentrate on public awareness, legislative initiatives, program investment and accountability to taxpayers.

This is an exciting time at VDOT. We are making history … together.  Now more than ever, it is important that we stay focused and work together.

Each one of us has an important role in saving lives on Virginia’s roads.
