VDOTer in Profile
About this Bulletin
Greetings VDOT Team,One of the most important services we can offer, as well as a lasting legacy we can leave, is a safer transportation infrastructure. Every life we help save and every injury we do something to prevent will be to our lasting credit.
That’s why a major campaign is being launched for greater safety on Virginia’s roadways. It is a major goal for Commissioner Ekern, and the Special Report in this edition presents strategic and every-day efforts VDOT will make for safety.
Also read about the “crisis therapy dog” in VDOTer-in-Profile … red-light cameras in Tech-Bytes … and a new way to assign construction inspectors in Best Practices.
Now a personal note: This edition will be my last one as editor. After 17 years of reporting news about so many of you, I will turn in my typewriter — oops, terminal (my reporting started elsewhere long ago).
As VDOT people, we have completed amazing projects and systems in these years; we’ve rebuilt after natural disasters; survived events like Y2K and 9/11; taken leadership at national levels; and enjoyed many decades as “family.”
I’ve been privileged to report on this passing parade and edit the flagship publication of our department. Retirement is the next stop. My thanks to all who have assisted me in getting stories, meeting deadlines and producing this publication. I will remember the VDOT team fondly, and I wish all of you the best in years to come!
